Nitric Acid

What is Nitric Acid?

Nitric Acid (HNO₃) is a strong, corrosive acid with a colorless vapor of nitric oxide that is commonly featured in the manufacturing of fertilizers, explosive materials, and a myriad of chemicals. Nitric acid is internationally popular because of its pungent odor as well as its ability to react with metals and many other substances. It is used as a primary compound in numerous chemical processes and industries.

Common Applications

  • Fertilizer Manufacturing: Serves as the primary raw material in the preparation of ammonium nitrate, which is a constituent of nitrogen fertilizers required to increase soil nutrients for agricultural practices.
  • Chemical Industries: Very crucial in the preparation of a variety of chemicals such as nitro compounds, explosives, and synthetic materials.
  • Nitrating Agent: Used in the purification and cleaning of metals, particularly in the preparation of stainless steel and other alloys.
  • Explosives: An important ingredient for the formulation of explosives like dynamite and TNT.
  • Food and Beverage Industry: Used in the processing of food-grade phosphates as well as for food-grade acids.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Used in the preparation of some pharmaceuticals as a reagent for some chemical reactions.
