What is Aluminum Hydroxide?

Aluminum Hydroxide is a hydroxide of aluminum with the chemical formula Al(OH)₃. It is an odorless white powder with amphoteric properties. It is used primarily as a flame retardant, filler, and antacid. Due to its stable chemicals, it is useful in many industries which include but are not limited to chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing.

  • Pharmaceuticals: Employed in vaccine formulations as an adjuvant of immune response, also as an active constituent of some antacid products.
  • Flame retardants: Smoke suppressants and flame retardants for rubber, plastics, and textiles.
  • Water treatment: Aids in neutralization of acidity and precipitating contaminants for deacidification.
  • Glass and ceramics: Manufacturers of glass and ceramic products use aluminum hydroxide as raw material.
  • Paper industry: Aluminum hydroxide is used in specialty paper coatings to improve the brightness and smoothness of the paper substrate.
  • Paints and coatings: Used for improving pigments eyeing viscosity modification.
  • Adhesives and sealants: Used to retard flames and add bulk to formulating compounds.
